The magnificent Balcon de Europe stretches out into the shimmering Mediterranean sea. This splendid area is paved with marble, and with an avenue of palm trees, is the centre of activity for many of the local festivals, or is an ideal place just to meet friends at one of the pavement cafes. Nerja’s most spectacular attraction is undoubtedly its fascinating caves, located just three kilometres from the centre of town. They include archaeological treasures such as paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains. One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, where many performances are staged during the summer. The caves also boast breathtaking stalagmites and stalactites. Since 1959, the “Festival of the Caves of Nerja” is celebrated every July. The caves are open all year round.
